Improv Everywhere is the site that organises “flashmob” events around the world – a mixture of performance art and pranks, where lots of people gather together in spots around the world to perform one action simultaneously. No Pants 2k8 – one of their most successful “missions” – featured 2,000 “undercover agents” meeting in ten cities around the world at exactly the same time without their trousers (embarrassing for any participating Brits who might have misunderstood the nature of “pants”).
At the site www.improveverywhere.com, you can see pictures of this, along with other missions such as the Human Mirror and No Shirts.
And now one man is trying to take on the flashmobs all on his own. An individual jumping in front of strangers and shouting “flashmob” doesn’t quite have the same visual impact as thousands of people doing the same thing. On the other hand it does highlight just how vainglorious the whole exercise can be. See him in action.
Web Watcher recently flagged up the launch of funnyordie.co.uk, Matt Lucas and David Walliams’s British version of the highly successful US comedy sketch website. Well, it’s not an entirely altruistic venture on their part. Little Britain USA is launching Stateside and you can now see clips from the HBO show on the site (ahead of the launch on BBC One tomorrow).
Some highlights include Behind the Scenes featuring a range of stars including Rosie O’Donnell and David Schwimmer, and new characters such as Mark and Tom, the buff, but underendowed, gym buddies. It’s the same old purile stuff – and unlike other Brit-adapted shows such as The Office, it will be of comfort to its original fans that it doesn’t look like the humour has been lost in translation.
Speaking of translation, the Speech Accent Archive is a quirky little site that reads the same paragraph about a girl named Stella in numerous different English accents. Yapese or Maninkakan, anyone?
