Taunton: (day two of four)
Somerset 114-0 and 106 (D.J. Pattinson 5-40, A.R. Adams 4-39) v Nottinghamshire 230 (C. Read 74 not out, S.R. Patel 56, P.D. Trego 4-54)
Lunch
Chris Read, whose unbeaten 74 came off 94 balls and included eight fours and a six, shepherded Charlie Shreck for long enough to gain a first innings lead of 124 for Nottinghamshire. The captain had lost Mark Ealham, Andre Adams and Darren Pattinson for ducks, two of these tail-enders to the medium pace of Alfonso Thomas, but drove productively and retained enough of the strike to put on the lion’s share of a 37-run partnership with Shreck. In response, Justin Langer and Marcus Trescothick made an aggressive start, pulling on 50 without loss before lunch, by when Read had left the field with an injury that occurred when he was standing up to Ealham. Nottinghamshire’s bowlers found less help in the conditions than on the first day.
Tea
Somerset openers Marcus Trescothick and Justin Langer were able to add 64 runs between a late resumption after lunch and an early tea on account of rain. Each reached his half-century, the captain off 64 balls with eight fours – mostly aggressively struck in an arc between cover point and mid wicket – and the former England batsman off 83 balls, with seven fours. Nottinghamshire, who turned to Graeme Swann’s off spin during this passage of play, were without their captain, Chris Read, who had dislocated a thumb in the morning session. Bilal Shafayat deputised behind the stumps, keeping sufficiently well to have a confident appeal for a stumping against Trescothick, who just got his back foot down in time.
